City council wants to press ahead with the Waverley-Taylor underpass.

Councillors voted down a motion by Russ Wyatt and Ross Eadie to put that project and upgrades at Marion and Taylor on the backburner.

Wyatt argued the projects and others might not be needed, because of the prospects of rail relocation. City CAO Doug McNeil told council there is no guarantee rail lines will be moved, despite the fact a provincial task force is studying the issue.

Mayor Brian Bowman says the city needs to proceed with the underpass, pointing out $155 million is on the table from all three levels of government.

The funding still needs approval from a lower city committee that delayed a vote on it, because councillors said they needed more information.
