Colleen Bready's forecast: Cooler temperatures on the way in Manitoba

Share

After this week’s temperature rollercoaster climbed as high as 0 C by late Thursday morning in Winnipeg, be prepared for it to fall again this afternoon.

The warm front associated with a low pressure system passing to the north pushed warmer air into Manitoba yesterday and today.

By this morning, the low had made its way to the Churchill area. That means its trailing cold front will whip up northwest winds and send temperatures falling this afternoon across most of the province.

Across the north, temperatures will drop to the mid to upper minus teens. In the southwest, expect temperatures to fall to around -7 C or -8 C, and in the southeast to -5 C or -6 C.

Even with the drop, temperatures will remain well above normal for this time of year – for now.

The cold front will also whip up flurries across the north today, which could also clip the south.

Areas in the southeast closer to the Ontario border will see some light snow this afternoon. Higher accumulations around two to four cm of snowfall are expected in northwestern Ontario.

Ahead tonight, the sky will start to clear as arctic high pressure starts to take back over.

Overnight lows will fall into the mid to upper minus teens in the south and into the -20s in the north.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the next round of snow arrives in the province on Friday, courtesy of a low pressure system moving in from the Northwest Territories. The weather agency said five to 10 cm of snow will fall in western Manitoba late this week into the weekend.

Flurries and snow are likely in Winnipeg and the Red River Valley on Saturday during the day and night.

A big drop in temperatures follows Sunday, but with some sunshine.
