WINNIPEG -- A portion of Henderson Highway was shut down following a collision involving a Winnipeg Transit bus Thursday evening.

Winnipeg police tweeted Henderson at Kimberly Avenue was blocked off. Police shared the update shortly before 6 p.m. on Thursday

On Friday morning, police told CTV News Winnipeg the scene is now clear and the bus has been removed from the yard. There are no issues with traffic at this time.

The city said fire crews were called to the scene around 5:09 p.m. for reports that a Winnipeg Transit bus crashed into a home in the 700 block of Henderson.

The bus could be seen stopped on the front lawn with damage to the front end.

One man, who lives a couple of doors down from where the crash took place, said he rushed over to the scene.

“We heard a huge bang and we walked out our door and there was a light stand laying across the street and all of a sudden there was a transit bus in our neighbour’s front yard,” he said.

“It hit our shrubs and our bushes. It’s shaken us pretty good.”

Others who live in the area saw red and blue flashing lights and tried to figure out what happened.

“We see a bunch of trees and a bunch of lights knocked down and it’s usually a friendly area and this happened,” said Demytro Mizyk, an area resident.

“I don’t know. I’ve lived here 15 years and never seen something like that.”

Officers on scene told CTV News people were injured, and the city confirmed that eight people were taken to hospital. Seven are in stable condition and one is in unstable condition.

Romeo Ignacio, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505, confirmed the bus driver was taken to hospital in unstable condition, but has since been upgraded to stable.

He said the driver suffered from a medical condition while the bus was in gear.

"Our prayers go out to those involved in the crash," he said.
