Dozens gathered outside the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba Saturday night to express their condolences to the families of the victims of a tragic murder-suicide.

Winnipeg's Filipino-Canadian community held a vigil Saturday evening to remember the victim of a tragic murder-suicide that left a three-year-old child parentless.

"An issue like domestic violence is hidden. To see this many people come out to express their concern and sadness about this issue is very heartwarming," said Darlyne Bautista of the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba.

Twenty-eight-year-old Renelle Bermudez Nonato was a newcomer to Canada from the Philippines when she was killed by her husband, Julito Nonato on March 24. Julito then took his own life. The couple were living in a Maples area apartment when the incident happened,

The community hosted a prayer and vigil to express their grief and sadness over the incident.

Victims of domestic violence and immigration advocates spoke at the vigil, which aimed to bring greater awareness to domestic violence and immigrant concerns.

The vigil was held at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba on Keewatin Street Saturday.
