The community of Sanford is grieving the deaths of two teens who died last week in a highway crash.

Cody Rempel and Jordan Polanski, both 18, were best friends.

Last Thursday, the two teens were in a pickup truck trying to cross the South Perimeter at Brady Road when they were killed in a collision with a semi-truck around 1 p.m.

The teens' deaths have had a deep impact on their community of Sanford, located southwest of Winnipeg.

"It's really hard to imagine they are not going to be here for graduation (because) it's eight weeks away," said Lauren Reimer, a classmate.

For days, friends have been coming to the crash site to grieve and say goodbye.

"It's really hard and I just needed to come and pay my respects (because) they were really amazing guys," said Deandra Dasilva, another classmate.

At the teens' high school, the flag was lowered. Students have also been wearing plaid and cowboy boots in the boys' honour.

Kelly Barkman, superintendent with the Red River Valley School Division, said grief counselors have been brought in to help students and staff cope with the deaths.

"A school is like a community. The loss is being felt inside the building," said Barkman.

RCMP continue to investigate the collision.
