Councillors voted in favour Wednesday of a new bus fare smart-card system to start in 2013 in Winnipeg.

The new cards will replace paper tickets and the pass system. Transfers with barcodes will also be available, and paying with coins for bus fare will remain an option for payment.

At Wednesday's meeting, councillors also agreed to study the benefits of increasing illegal dumping fines and council voted against looking at the potential benefits of bringing in the public sector to assist with garbage and recycling collection.

Coun. Justin Swandel (St. Norbert) and Coun. John Orlikow (River Heights – Fort Garry)  also asked the city to sell a piece of land called parcel 4 across from the Goldeyes ballpark to The Forks for $6.5 million, but that motion was voted down.

Council defeated a previous plan to build an indoor water park on the gravel parking lot site.
