A city councillor wants to accelerate road work and ease traffic a lot faster this summer.

St. James Coun. Scott Fielding is pushing for 50 per cent of major road and bridge construction to be extended to evening and weekends this year. That way, construction crews can get the projects done faster.

It would include upgrades to the Polo Park area over the next two summers.

The Manitoba Heavy Construction Association opposes the plan.

It says the incentives might not be worth the overtime paid out, and it's less safe for crews to work at night, not to mention homeowners may not want to hear construction noise on evenings and weekends.

Fielding expects city staff will study his plan and make recommendations by April.
