The Crown is asking for jail sentences for two RCMP officers found guilty recently for assaulting a 19-year-old man three years ago.

The RCMP received a complaint on Nov. 13, 2008 that a 19-year-old Powerview resident was assaulted while being transported in October of that year by Powerview RCMP.

Cpl. Jeffrey Thomas Moyse and Const. Trevor Kyle Ens were charged with assault and later found guilty in court in September 2011.

The Crown said the officers breached trust, especially because police should be held to a higher regard. The Crown argues that the officers are not rookies fresh out of the academy and should have known better.

A victim impact statement was also submitted in court.

The mother of the assault victim said she is ashamed that at first she doubted her son about the incident, saying, "The last thing I wanted to do was make false accusations."

She said she later felt betrayed by the same institution she instructed her children to look up to.

The Crown said the victim was not in lawful custody at time of beating. "This was a man who was going about his own business," said the Crown.

The defence is slated to weigh in on Nov. 24 before a judge decides on sentencing.
