Man killed by Alberta RCMP before Christmas was armed: ASIRT

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says a man who was killed by Mounties last month was armed when he was shot by officers.

The man was involved in a standoff with police at a rural property outside Tofield prior to his death on Dec. 23.

According to ASIRT, officers had spoken to the man, who was armed with a weapon, before he retreated into the house.

Police contained the property and a crisis negotiation team was brought in.

Some time later, ASIRT says the man came out of the house armed with a handgun and a sharp weapon.

Two officers fired at the man. Despite medical assistance, he died at the scene as a result of the shooting.

As part of its investigation, ASIRT is looking for anyone who may have witnessed any part of the confrontation to call them at 780-644-1483.

ASIRT is tasked with investigating incidents involving Alberta police officers that involve serious injury or death as well as allegations of police misconduct.
