Extreme cold warning takes over Manitoba

Share

An extreme cold warning has been issued for the majority of Manitoba as the wind chill could hit near -40 or colder.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued the warning for all of Manitoba, except the Churchill area.

"A prolonged period of very cold air temperatures at or below -30 with wind chill values near -40 and below is expected for much of the southern Prairies this weekend," ECCC said in the warning.

It also notes the temperatures could even be colder up north with the wind chill feeling as cold as -45.

The cold is expected to last all weekend in the southern part of the province before tapering off Monday; however, the northern portion of Manitoba will experience those cold temperatures into next week.

ECCC is reminding people to dress warmly and to protect any exposed skin, so frostbite doesn't develop.

The weather agency also notes pets should stay indoors during this cold snap.

For Winnipeg on Saturday, the high is expected to hit -23 C, but the wind chill will feel like -41 in the morning and -31 in the afternoon.

Overnight Saturday, the temperature could feel like -43 with the wind chill.
