Investigators are still looking into the cause of a fire on the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation that left 28 homeless on Friday. The fire broke out around 7:00 p.m. at a two-storey multi-family complex in the town of Scanterbury.

RCMP remained on the scene Saturday morning. The 28 people who lived in the complex have all been accounted for. Several were treated for smoke inhalation. Displaced residents were to be placed in a hotel for the night.

Two RCMP officers from Grand Marais were on patrol nearby when they got the call on Friday. They were first on the scene and helped get several occupants outside.

About 30 firefighters from Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, East Beaches Fire & Rescue, and the Rural Municipality of St. Clements responded to the call. Thick smoke could be seen from Highway 59.

The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner will assist the investigation.
