It could be Winnipeg's first transit-oriented neighbourhood, but not everyone is on board.

More than 75 people showed up at an information session Tuesday night, voicing concern over a proposal to develop the old Fort Rouge rail yard.

Lexington Investment Corp. plans to build townhouses, mid-rise and hi-rise apartments and condos on the property.

The proposed development is right along the southwest rapid transit corridor. It's designed to give residents easy access to public transit.

Some residents say that would ruin their community.

"There's the traffic aspect, there's the blotting out of the sun, the shadows. We're going to change the community into a Central Park," said Doug Reid.

Others say there's room for improvement.

"It's a very bad idea. We could compromise. I would say wipe out the hi-rises. We don't want people peering in our back year. It's a big eye sore as far as I'm concerned," said Erin Cyr.

Tuesday night's event was organized by the Lord Roberts Community Coalition.

No one from the city of Winnipeg was available for comment Tuesday evening.
