Play pen recall

Health Canada has recalled a number of children's items including a playpen that has been blamed for at least one death.

Health Canada says Safety 1st and Eddie Bauer model Play Yards, better known as playpens, have a defect that could cause a child to be suffocated by an object.

This recall involves the bassinet attachment of the following three different models of Safety 1st and Eddie Bauer Play Yards.

  • Safety 1st Play Safe Play Yard: model numbers beginning with 05536C. This portable playpen was sold with a bassinet attachment, change station, storage area, and mobile.
  • Safety 1st Dream Magic or Deluxe Play Yard: model numbers beginning with 05049C. This playpen was sold with a bassinet attachment, change station, storage area, and mobile.
  • Eddie Bauer Complete Care Play Yard: model numbers beginning with 05088C. This portable playpen was sold with a bassinet attachment, change station, and mobile.

The model number can be found on a sewn-on warning label, located at the bottom of the play yard.

Testing by Health Canada has revealed that a child's weight presses the center of the bassinet downwards, increasing the angled surfaces at either end of the product.

If a child is left unattended in the bassinet portion of the play yard, small movements of the child could cause the child to slide, posing a potential risk of injury or death due to suffocation.

Health Canada has received one report of a death which occurred when the child was placed in the bassinet attachment of the play yard with blankets and a soft stuffed toy.

The play yard includes instructions which state that the child is not to be placed in the bassinet with blankets.

Dorel Distribution Canada has received 4 complaints of the bassinet in these play yards not laying flat, with no reported injuries relating to this condition.

Health Canada is advising people to stop using the bassinet portion of the play yards and contact Dorel Distribution Canada to receive a free kit to address the issue.

Health Canada says you should not return the products to the store you bought it in.

More than 37,000 of the recalled products were sold at Zellers, Wal-Mart, Toys 'R' Us, and Costco stores across Canada between the dates of March 2007 and May 2009.

Stroller recall

The other item recalled by Health Canada is Bugaboo "Bee" strollers which were sold in blue, dark khaki, pink, red, yellow, and black options.

The recalled strollers have the words "bugaboo bee" printed on the left side of the seat.

The strollers also have item code 51100, which can be found on the plastic support under the seat.

The problem with the strollers is that one or both sides of the brakes can fail, causing the stroller to unexpectedly roll away on an incline and posing a risk of injury to the child occupant.

Bugaboo has received 121 reports of the stroller's brakes failing, with no reported injuries.

Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries to Canadians related to the use of this product.

Owners of the product are asked to stop using the stroller and contact the manufacturer for a repair kit
