The St. Vital Minor Hockey Association released an official statement Friday, following on a meeting that was held with hockey players, coaches and parents on Thursday night.

Hockey officials confirmed Wednesday they were investigating allegations that a coach with the Norberry-Glenlee Knights held a fight lesson for teenage players on the team.

The coach spoke via phone on Dec. 13 to CTV News.

He said he doesn’t condone violence and he doesn’t teach his players to attack others on the ice.

He said, however, that fighting is an unfortunate reality in the game, even in minor hockey. The coach said his team has been involved in a couple of fights, which he believes were the results of unprovoked attacks on his players.

Sources had told CTV News the coach was trying to show players how to defend themselves, if attacked.

The association held its meeting on Dec. 13.

“From this initial meeting the committee was able to ascertain that the coaches did not specifically conduct an exercise to teach fighting to their players,” said the St. Vital Minor Hockey Association in its statement.

As CTV News reported earlier in the week, one player reportedly received a concussion during the team’s practice.

"Reports of a player being injured during the practice were true but from the first-hand accounts of the players and parents in attendance at the practice the committee was unable to determine at which point in the practice the injury occurred," said the statement from the association.

CTV asked for clarification from the association Friday, but did not receive a response.

In its statement, the association said a report will be made into the incident.

“The meeting concluded with a strong show of support for the coaching staff from both the players and parents. A complete report into the incident will be prepared by the St. Vital Minor Hockey Association, a copy of which will be sent to Hockey Winnipeg,” said the association.

Hockey Manitoba had previously said it is also investigating.

All but two families were present at last night’s meeting and both of those families took the time to send letters to the committee prior to the commencement of the meeting.
