A man found murdered on Barber Street was once the president of the Zig Zag Crew, the Hells Angels puppet club.

On Nov. 2, police identified the victim as Daniel Benjamin Kachkan, 34.

CTV News has learned the victim was shot in the head. Officers have not yet released the cause of death and said an autopsy is pending.

Police have also not yet confirmed if the death was a targeted hit, but said the possibility is being examined.

"We are certainly looking at the possibility that this individual may have been targeted," said Const. Jason Michalyshen, a spokesperson for Winnipeg police.

Officers have said Kachkan was killed sometime between Friday, Oct. 29 and Monday morning, Nov. 1. He was found by family members on Monday.

Sources said Kachkan's past may have come back to haunt him. CTV News has been told revenge may be a possible motive for the killing.

In 2005, Kachkan was charged with manslaughter in connection with the 2005 death of fellow Zig Zag Crew member Aaron Hannibal, who had been stabbed almost 20 times behind a convenience store. Kachkan was found not guilty two years later.

Kachkan was then promoted to president of the Zig Zag Crew, but was later kicked out of the organization, apparently because he was removing gang patches from members instead of growing the club.

"Aspects of this investigation are going to take us down an avenue where we're looking at criminal history, criminal past or previous gang associations," said Michalyshen.

CTV News is told a close family member of Aaron Hannibal's belongs to the Rock Machine, a rival gang of the Zig Zag Crew.

While police say Kachkan's past associations will be looked at, investigators are not yet ready to say if it's the reason behind his death.

Officers continue to search for suspects.
