The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is looking for witnesses following an officer-involved shooting on Monday.

Winnipeg police received a report of a man with a gun in the 200 block of La Verendrye Street just after 11 a.m.

Police responded to the scene and initiated a traffic pursuit.

The suspect vehicle crashed near Marion Street and Archibald Street very shortly after the chase started. Police said the collision had nothing to do with their officers.

Few details are available at this time, but at some point after the chase, a 26-year-old man was shot by an officer in the 400 block of Archibald Street.

The injured male was transported to hospital in critical condition.

Police Chief Danny Smyth did confirm that the man was in surgery Monday afternoon.

Police said because an officer was involved in the shooting, the Independent Investigations Unit will be taking over the investigation.

Individuals who may have information or video footage are asked to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
