A new program in Portage la Prairie hopes to lead to safer roads in the city and surrounding areas.

The Report Impaired Drivers 911 initiative encourages drivers to phone 911 if they suspect a vehicle is being operated by someone who is impaired.

"Through RID 911, citizens can play an active role in helping to avert the heartache and tragedy caused by impaired driving," said Assistant Commissioner Bill Robinson, commanding officer of RCMP D division.

Portage la Prairie is the second Manitoba city to participate in the program, after it was launched in Brandon last spring.

MADD Canada has been promoting the initiative throughout the country.
