A tense standoff that kept an East Kildonan neighbourhood on lockdown for five hours ended peacefully early Monday morning.

Police were called to a home on Eaglemere Drive just before 7 p.m. Sunday for a report of domestic violence.

When officers got to the home, they said a man armed with a gun had locked himself inside the residence.

Neighbours said some homes were evacuated, while other residents were ordered to stay in their basements as officers made contact with the man.

The police tactical team negotiated with the man for several hours.

Just after midnight, he was taken into custody.

People were allowed back into their homes a short time later.

Police said a 48-year-old man faces weapons-related charges.
