Ontario NDP leader concerned about Canadian response to Trump tariff threats

Ontario's NDP leader is concerned about the Canadian response to Trump's tariff threats.

The leader of the Ontario NDP says Canadian leaders have been negotiating with each other before knowing exactly what economic sanctions U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump will impose on Canada.

“I think we need to have a unified approach on this across the country, and I think in Ontario that means sitting down with all the sectors,” Marit Stiles told CTV News Tuesday.

Stiles was in Sarnia to hold a round-table discussion with a small group of supporters. She’s urging Ontario Premier Doug Ford to hold off on calling an early provincial election, and to work with the New Democrats on a plan to respond to Trump’s threats.

“I’m concerned that we are going to sell out one sector to save another. Not one job in farming and agriculture, not one auto sector job, not one petro-chemical job. We should be able to save all the jobs in Ontario. And I would urge Mr. Ford to take a stable, direct approach and work with us, folks that have experience in many of these border communities,” said Stiles.

The Ontario NDP has not yet chosen candidates for the ridings of Sarnia-Lambton, or Lambton-Kent-Middlesex.
