A man taken to hospital in critical condition after a stabbing in St. Boniface on Saturday has died, police confirmed Sunday. They have now charged a 38-year-old man with second-degree murder.

Police found 31-year-old Victor Hardisty suffering from stab wounds to the upper body in the 100 block of La Verendrye Street around 2 a.m. on Saturday.

In their investigation, police said they discovered that Hardisty had arrived at the house shortly before he was stabbed. A drinking party started and a few hours later an argument escalated to the point that Hardisty was stabbed.

Neighbours say they've seen police at the address before. One woman told CTV  she woke up to a scream, looked outside and saw the commotion.

The suspect fled before police arrived. Around 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, police found a suspect at a residence on Manitoba Avenue and arrested him.

Police charged Elvis Marcel McKay, 38, with second-degree murder.
