WINNIPEG - The Manitoba government says it is aiming to ensure that criminals behind bars don't harass or intimidate people by phone.
A bill now before the legislature would clarify that corrections officers can monitor and record inmate phone calls and use the conversations for criminal proceedings.
Justice Minister Andrew Swan says the aim is to prevent inmates from threatening or intimidating people, especially those who have already been victimized.
The proposed changes to the Corrections Services Act are aimed primarily at domestic violence, but can be used for other crimes.
The bill is expected to become law next year.
