WINNIPEG -- Manitoba is urging the federal government and a First Nation to reach a deal that would allow children who were evacuated from a flooded reserve to return to school.
The 85 children from Lake St. Martin First Nation were among hundreds of community residents who were taken to Winnipeg after severe flooding last year.
A few weeks ago the city closed a temporary school they were attending because of fire code violations.
Some of the children are now going to different public schools -- a move that has upset the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.
Manitoba Aboriginal Affairs Minister Eric Robinson says Ottawa and the band should come to terms as soon as possible.
The province is offering after-school programs for the children and their families.
