Summer vacation for school children is quickly coming to an end in Manitoba.

“It’s actually gone by pretty fast!” said student Declan Gorman.

Hundreds of kids spent their last Friday of freedom at Tinkertown, determined to wring the last drop of fun out of their summer vacation.

Many other children were tagging along to the mall with their parents for back to school shopping.

10-year-old Aela Robbins was picking out clothes with her mom.

“She’s the number one priority today,” said mom Kristen Robbins.

And the prospect of returning to school?

“I’m excited for it!” said Aela.

Not every child shares that sentiment.

According to psychologist Toby Rutner it can be an anxious time for some.

“In addition to the academic, the social aspect of the school situation is often overlooked,” he said, “And this is really the source of anxiety for most children.”

Rutner thinks sometime parents can contribute to that anxiety because they’re so concerned about how their kids will do and the children can sense that.

He advises parents to keep calm and communicate with confidence and optimism to their children.
