A high-ranking military commander charged with two murders in Ontario was previously posted in Manitoba.

Col. Russell Williams, 46, of Tweed, Ont. is the former top military commander at CFB Trenton in Ontario. He faces first-degree murder charges in the alleged killings of Jessica Lloyd, 27, and Marie France Comeao, 38, in Ontario. He also faces charges for two sexual assaults.

While Williams currently faces charges in Ontario, police in Manitoba are reviewing local cases.

In 1990, Williams was posted in Southport, near Portage la Prairie, where he taught aviation for two years.

Winnipeg Police and RCMP say they will review local information as the Ontario case unfolds.

Police currently use a computer system called the violent crime linkage analysis system, or VICLAS.

The VICLAS unit includes RCMP and Winnipeg officers and studies potential similarities between old and new crimes.

"If we do have information that comes our way that warrants (us) to look into any of our unsolved homicides or sexual assaults…we will follow it up," says RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Line Karpish.

Williams was relieved of his command at CFB Trenton on Monday.
