A birth control manufacturer has recalled one of its products.

Health Canada advised that Janssen Inc. recalled one lot of Ortho-Cept tablets over concerns two of the oral contraceptive’s active ingredients were of a potential low potency.

It could result in reduced effectiveness or even unplanned pregnancy.

The recall affects the 28 day packages of Ortho-Cept tablets with an expiry date of September 2015 and lot 13DM732.

Health Canada advised any customers to return unopened packages to their pharmacist, discontinue use of Ortho-Cept and use another reliable form of birth control.

It also advised customers to speak with their healthcare provider about alternative forms of birth control, as Ortho-Cept is being discontinued and will no longer be available on the Canadian market.
