A draft of a new bylaw that would ban smoking in outdoor public places has been unveiled in Winnipeg.
The ban would prohibit people from smoking within 30 metres of any outdoor, city-run space used for youth activities and sporting events.
The bylaw would also ban people from smoking within 30 metres of a playground, a swimming pool or spray pad and school grounds.
It would also ban smoking within eight metres of any City of Winnipeg workplace and health-care facilities.
The fines for breaking the bylaw could range from $100 to $1,000, depending on whether it was a first offence, or subsequent ones.
The bylaw still needs to be approved by city council before it can be put into place.
