Well-known Manitoba Cree elder Sarah Harper has passed away.

Born in 1906 Harper passed away Saturday night at the age of 111.

Harper was from Buninonibee Cree Nation, also known as Oxford House, where she lived her entire life.

MKO Grand Chief Sheila North Wilson said Harper will be deeply missed and leaves behind a legacy that will be there forever.

“Her loss is tremendous, she takes with her the knowledge and wisdom that comes with having a life that long,” said North Wilson.

Harper was born before treaties for the community were signed in 1909.

“She was around for many historical moments in the community and especially for indigenous people,” said North Wilson.

North Wilson told CTV News family was very important to Harper. She said if there was a message Harper could leave for the community it would be to take care of their families.

For the last year, Harper lived in personal care part-time, and the other half of her time was spent at home where she continued to do her own housework.

“She was very much independent and taught her kids and her grandkids the same things and our community,” said North Wilson.

North Wilson told CTV News it’s possible Harper may have been the oldest indigenous person in Canada.

She said the 111-year-old lived a youthful life.

“Everytime I saw her she liked to joke. Even one of the last moments I was with her she said ‘I wish I could still dance,” said North Wilson.

In August Harper celebrated her 111th birthday.

“She was very loved,” said North Wilson.
