Winnipeg lawyer Maria Mitousis issued a statement through police on Friday, while she recovers from a letter-bomb explosion that seriously injured her last week.

“I want people to know I’m OK, and I’ll be better,” Mitousis said in her statement.

“I’m doing great, but I’m not doing great. I have lots of support from friends and family. I wouldn’t have this positive outlook without this support,” she said.

“I’m not going to stop.”

She said she was relieved she could still see after the blast.

Mitousis lost her right hand and her left one was also injured in the explosion.

“If all goes well, I’ll have to become left handed…and I was just recently getting quite good at golf,” said Mitousis, in a moment police described as a lighter part of their interview.

She also suffered injuries to her face, chest and thighs in the blast. She underwent 10.5 hours of surgery afterwards.

Mitousis expressed thanks to hospital staff.

“Everyday strangers (staff) walk in and make me feel comfortable,” she said.

She also thanked police and the fire paramedic service for support from their members after the explosion.

“I knew what was happening, where I was going, and I knew I was safe," she said.

“I’m going to get past this. I live in the moment,” she thought while being transported in the ambulance.

Mitousis said she looks forward to resuming her career as a lawyer, and thanked the legal community.

“This is not a personal attack on what we do, keep doing it,” she said. “(When the explosion happened), we took care of each other.”

Guido Amsel faces charges in connection with the explosion.
