The Manitoba government says it will launch an independent review of a government-run group home that has been at the centre of allegations of abuse by some former residents.

Gord Mackintosh, the province's family services minister, says they want to know the full extent of the conditions that existed in the Cathedral Valley Group Home in the 1970s and '80s.

He says the probe will also recommend what kind of resources former residents may need to heal from their experiences.

Mackintosh says it's paramount that the former residents get the help they need to get on with their lives.

Earlier this month, Phil Fontaine, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, called on the provincial government to launch a public inquiry into the plight of the so-called 'lost boys' who grew up in provincial group homes.

One of the former residents of Cathedral Valley, Sam McGillivary, camped out on the grounds of the legislature earlier this month to protest his treatment, which he says included being beaten and being forced to work long hours as farm workers.
