Winnipeg police said an 18-year-old man faces impaired driving charges for a collision at Isabel Street and Notre Dame Avenue that claimed the life of a 53-year-old pedestrian on Feb. 15.

Police said a Chevy Impala travelling northbound at a “high rate of speed ran a red light” and hit a Honda CRV heading westbound.

The CRV was forced up on the west sidewalk on Isabel where it hit the pedestrian, said officers.

The pedestrian was rushed to hospital but died from injuries.

The driver of the CRV and three occupants in the Impala were also injured and were taken to hospital in stable condition.

The driver of the Impala was not injured and fled the scene, said police.

On Feb. 17, investigators located and arrested the driver of the Impala.

Dakota Dennis Smoke, 18, of Winnipeg faces numerous charges, including driving impaired causing death, four counts of driving impaired causing bodily harm, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and breach of probation, said police.
