A 23-year old Brandon man is dead after being shot early Saturday morning.

Police were called to a residence in Neepawa around 4 a.m. after reports of a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Emergency crews arrived at the home and found the victim Brent Michael David Bialkoski dead.

It is believed Bialkoski was at a local bar earlier in the night and left to go to a house party. Witnesses say he was followed.

The victim's mother Bev Bialkoski-Moore says her son was shot in the head and his girlfriend hit in the face with a gun.

"Brent opened the door and a couple of guys were standing there," she said.

"He just turned his head for a sec and they shot him."

The victim’s girlfriend was able to run upstairs to get away from the alleged shooters.

Area residents are shocked such a violent crime took place in their normally quiet town.

Neepawa Mayor Bob Thurston says he's been in the town for 35 years and can't recall this type of crime happening in all those years.

"There probably has been but it's been so long," said Thurston.

"We just don't remember something like this happening in our community."

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit as well as the Winnipeg Forensic Identification Section and the Spruce Plains RCMP are investigating.

No arrests have been made.

An autopsy is scheduled at the Health Sciences Centre on Monday.
