Winnipeg police have taken a suspect into custody wanted for using a gun to confront officers last week.

Police said a male suspect armed with a gun in the 500 block of Alexander Avenue got out of a vehicle and confronted officers on July 21.

At least one officer fired a gunshot and the suspect fled on foot.

Last week, police issued a warrant for the arrest of the suspect, Geoffrey Oliver Reid, 23, of Winnipeg.

On Monday afternoon at around 4 p.m., Winnipeg police closed a stretch of Maryland Street near Sargent Avenue after getting a tip that the suspect was inside a residence.

The police's tactical support team was brought in and remained on scene for a few hours.

Officers said the Reid was taken into custody without incident after stepping out of the residence around 6:20 p.m. on Monday.

Upon his arrest, police found out Reid had an untreated gunshot wound. Had Reid sought treatment earlier, it's believed police may have caught him sooner. Under Manitoba law, it's mandatory for healthcare facilities to report all gunshot wounds to police.

After his arrest, Reid was taken to hospital for treatment.

Geoffrey Oliver Reid faces a number of charges, including pointing a firearm at police, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breaching probation, said officers.

He is being held in custody.

CTV News has learned that Reid was handed a 10-year weapons ban in February 2010 after being charged with a trafficking offence.
