Winnipeg police are urging people not to handle suspicious packages, and to call 911 after a concerned resident drove to a local police station with an item in tow.

Police said around 5:30 p.m. Monday, a woman went to the West District Station on Grant Avenue with a suspicious package. Officers said she left the item in her vehicle and explained to police she had received the package earlier that day addressed to her, but with no return address.

The parking lot was cordoned off and members of the bomb unit attended. Their investigation revealed the package was not an explosive device.

Police advise anyone who may receive or come across a suspicious package not to handle the item, and to call 911 immediately.

Police said movement of such packages could be catastrophic due to the potentially unstable contents.
