Gimli RCMP is investigating a death as suspicious.

On Tuesday afternoon officers responded to a report of an injured male.

Police said he has since died.

Gimli Mayor Randy Woroniuk said an 18-year-old man was stabbed.

It happened near the Gimli Theatre.

Woroniuk said he’s shocked.

"It is so rare," he said. “This is so out of the ordinary."

He asked RCMP for a briefing on the incident.

Several witnesses say the incident happened around 1 p.m.

Gimli senior Annette Smith said she saw police cover a black bicycle with a tarp.

The death comes on the eve before one of the town's biggest yearly festivals, The Gimli Film Festival.

Tuesday evening Woroniuk said he wanted reassure tourists and locals Gimli remains a safe town.

The Mounties’ forensic unit and major crimes unit is investigating.

According to Statistics Canada, the Rural Municipality of Gimli is roughly 6,200.
