A Winnipeg man and a Manitoba woman, who lied to authorities about the suspect’s identity, are wanted for an incident involving an assault on a police officer earlier this week.

Shortly before midnight Tuesday, Yellowhead RCMP made a traffic stop in Elphinstone, Manitoba, when the male driver left the vehicle and fled on foot. A woman and toddler were still in the vehicle at the time.

RCMP said an officer ran after the man, and an altercation ensued after which the suspect escaped.

The officer was treated and released for minor injuries at the local hospital.

Mark Blackbird, 33, of Winnipeg remains at large.

Blackbird is charged with several offences including assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and driving without a valid driver’s license.

Blackbird is described as 5’7” (174 cm) tall, around 244 lbs, with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing red pants and no shirt.

RCMP believe that Blackbird is in Keeseekoowenin First Nation, Manitoba.

Blackbird is considered dangerous and should not be approached.

The woman in the vehicle, 30-year-old Kelly Ducharme, of Elphinstone, gave false information to police regarding the man's identity.

Ducharme is charged with obstructing justice and a warrant for her arrest has been issued.

RCMP are asking anyone with information to contact the Elphinstone RCMP at 204-625-2090 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, submit a secure tip online at www.manitobacrimestoppers.com or text “TIPMAN” plus your message to CRIMES (274637).
