The officer who took Derek Harvey Zenk's finger prints after the fatal crash that killed Crystal Taman says she smelled liquor on Zenk's breath and that his eyes were glossed over.

Her testimony corroborated accounts from other witnesses who said Zenk reeked of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Const. Glenda Pederson says she made a mental note of Zenk's condition and told the lead officer of the investigation a couple days later, but didn't record it. She also told the inquiry East St.Paul Police Chief Harry Bakema seemed to sympathize with Zenk.

"It struck me he was more concerned about Zenk and his future than his victims," she told the inquiry Friday.

Zenk, a former City of Winnipeg police officer, slammed into two vehicles that were stopped at a red light in February 2005.

The driver of one of the vehicles, 40-year-old mother of three Crystal Taman, was killed.

The Crown dropped charges of impaired driving causing death against Harvey-Zenk because of what it cited as a lack of evidence against the former police officer. The man was given a two-year conditional sentence. He now lives in Brandon.

The Taman inquiry resumes Monday.
