Getting a new ‘do or some fresh ink will cost Manitobans more starting Sunday.

The province will now add a seven per cent provincial sales tax to all haircuts and tattoos, as well as some spa services. The changes were announced in the 2012 budget and take effect July 1.

Salon owners and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation recently petitioned the provincial government to delay or make adjustments to the new tax rules.

Salon owners are concerned the tax increase could affect their business and complicated rules for how to apply the tax will be difficult for existing software systems and small business owners.

The taxes will only apply to haircuts that cost over $50 or to haircuts that are combined with other services like dyes or perms.

Haircuts that are under $50 and not combined with any other salon services will remain PST-free.
