Winnipeg’s airport is seeing its busiest time of the year with travellers arriving or leaving for the holidays.

Airport staff said about 10,600 people will travel through the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport on Dec. 21. That’s about 1,500 more people than usual.

Airport staff members know it’ll be their busiest time of the year, so they try to make it as smooth as possible for travellers.

“A little more staff and a little more awareness to help get through those lines quicker,” said Christine Payne from the Winnipeg Airports Authority.

Airport staff said arriving early is a good idea for anyone and they have suggestions for gifts.

“Don’t wrap your gifts before you come to the airport because they could potentially be unwrapped through that security checkpoint,” said Payne.

The airport is offering a complimentary wrapping station just past security for anyone who needs it.

Airport staff said the number of people travelling drops on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day.
