Police said one person has died in a fire that destroyed a home on Fleet Avenue Thursday morning.

Flames began to shoot out of the home in River Heights at about 1:30 a.m. The stubborn blaze took hours to bring under control, said officials.

When fire crews arrived they were unable to go inside the home because of how badly it was burning. Fleet Avenue was closed between Cambridge and Thurso Streets.

Damage is estimated at $380,000, police said. The identity of the person and the cause of the fire have not been confirmed. Neighbours say a woman lived in the home.
