Officers were carrying out searches in downtown Winnipeg and the West End on June 28 as part of ongoing homicide investigations, said police.

"We have found two bodies in and around this particular location and we want to do our due diligence and we want to search this area thoroughly," said Const. Jason Michalyshen of the Winnipeg Police Service.

Among the officers carrying out searches were members of the canine unit. Police asked that people give officers a minimum of 50 feet working distance while they carried out the searches.

On Monday, police announced they had charged Shawn Lamb, 52, with three counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of three women.

The body of Carolyn Sinclair was found in April near a dumpster behind an apartment block on Notre Dame Avenue. Lorna Blacksmith’s body was found on June 22 in the backyard of a vacant house on Simcoe Street.

Lamb is also charged with the murder of Tanya Nepinak who went missing in September. Her body has not yet been found.

Parole documents show that Shawn Lamb had his release revoked or denied five times since 2001.

The documents show that Lamb’s criminal history began in 1976 and includes convictions for assault, mischief, fraud, drugs, weapons related offences, sexual assault and domestic violence, and that in one case a  man had clumps of his hair pulled out because of a $15 drug debt.

In 2002, Lamb's parole officer said his quickness to anger places him back into a crime cycle that puts the community at undue risk.

Winnipeg police said officers would continue investigating and would work with other police agencies across Canada.

The ground search for evidence in the West End may continue through Friday.
