Winnipeg police have confirmed they are investigating a homicide after making a discovery near a dumpster on Notre Dame Avenue Saturday.

Just after 10 a.m. officers went to an apartment building in the 700 block of Notre Dame to investigate what they called suspicious circumstances.

When they arrived officers found evidence near a dumpster, police said. They called in the forensic identification unit and the medical examiner to help them with their investigation and spent much of the day combing the area for evidence.

Police said they have found the body of a woman but have not yet released her identity.

Officers said an autopsy has been completed and they've spoke with the victim's family. Police are expected to release more details publicly Monday afternoon.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the homicide unit at 986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.
