Darcy Douglas Coutu of Winnipeg was the 34-year-old victim of Saturday morning's drive-by shooting. Police released his name Sunday.
His family tells CTV News Coutu was a father of three. Relatives are gathering in Winnipeg - but have requested privacy.
Gunned down outside hotel
Coutu was shot to death outside a Pembina Highway hotel early Saturday morning. Police believe he was the victim of a premeditated drive-by shooting - but they're not sure if he was the intended target. Police say he didn't have any gang ties.
The shooting happened at around 2:00 a.m. outside the Quality Inn on Pembina Highway near Grant Avenue. Blood and shattered glass mark the spot where Coutu was shot. He was outside on the patio when he was hit a number of times.
The shots woke-up Robert McInnis, who lives nearby. He jumped out of bed, watching the scene unfold from his kitchen window.
"They were giving him CPR, really working on him desperately," he told CTV News.
After the shooting it's believed a car was seen speeding away. Neighbours say they also saw people scatter on foot from the pub.
Carla Siemens lives across the street with a few friends. In the last year she says there's been increased violence at the hotel, including knife fights.
"We've had drunk people knocking on our door in the middle of the afternoon trying to get in," she said shaking her head.
That was something they could tolerate -- but a murder, practically on their doorstep, is something else.
Police are investigating witnesses - but still have no description of any suspects.
