Winnipeg police are advising the public about a phone scam from callers pretending to be associated with Manitoba Hydro.

During the calls, an individual identifies himself as being with Manitoba Hydro and tries to sell victims a “power-saving device,” said police.

The caller then asks the victim to provide a credit card number for the order.

Police said Manitoba Hydro does not solicit sales over the phone and does not provide such a device.

Anyone receiving the calls should not provide their credit card and should hang up immediately.

People receiving the calls should also notify the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. People who have been victimized financially should also call the fraud centre, along with reporting it to police.
