Two Winnipeg police officers who faced charges for obstructing justice have been acquitted.

Const. Paul Clark and Const. Graeme Beattie had been charged over allegations of falsifying their notes and reports in the arrest of an alleged drug dealer in May 2008 in the 600 block of Redwood Avenue.

The prosecution in the case had relied on testimony from a Crown attorney in the Redwood drug case. She told court she had to drop charges against the suspect because of discrepancies in what the policemen told her and what was in their reports.

The judge ruled the attorney may have misunderstood what she was told.

Manitoba Justice Glen Joyal said in a decision that he accepted evidence that the constables did not falsify their notes and reports.

Joyal ruled the officers had "candid and honest" gaps in memory. He said there was nothing in their testimony to support the Crown's allegation of a police conspiracy.

“In the result, both Constable Beattie and Constable Clark are acquitted of the one and only charge in the indictment,” wrote Joyal in the decision.
