Winnipeg police arrested a 23-year-old man after a high-speed chase through Assiniboine early Friday morning.

Around 5 a.m., officers saw a vehicle speeding down Roblin Boulevard near Assiniboine Park. They tried to stop the vehicle but it sped away, police said.

The police chopper was called in to track the car. Officers on the ground tried to stop the vehicle twice with road spike belts but were unsuccessful.

Later, the car was found abandoned on Lee Boulevard and Shore Street. The police helicopter tracked the suspects after they left the vehicle and directed officers on the ground to the two suspects who were running near railway tracks in the area.

A 20-year-old man and a 23-year-old man were both arrested.

The 23-year-old man is now facing charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from a police officer, police said.
