The price of pork in Manitoba may be the rise, but the size of some products is shrinking. Some packages of bacon have downsized from 500 grams to 375 grams. The number of hot dogs per package will also decrease.

“All different various cuts of pork have gone up and it’s causing everything else to go up. So things like our deli meats, bacon, wieners, all those items are starting to go up. And companies are actually downsizing to keep prices stable,” says Munther Zeid, manager and owner of Food Fare.

Zeid says the rise in prices is due to high feed costs, and the devastating Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus. Customers can expect to see smaller quantities in products from Maple Leaf Foods and Schneiders.

“As a single bachelor you look to get as much as you can for your money, and I mean to hear that quantity is going down and prices are staying the same is a little disappointing to say the least,” says customer Evan Matthews.

Food Fare customer Megan Neumann agrees. “I think there’s a lot of pork lovers in Winnipeg. People love their bacon, and I think it’s going to upset a lot of people,” she says.

Zeid predicts that pork prices will eventually go back down. But Cantor’s Meat Manager, Gilbert Kohlman, thinks the smaller bacon portions are here to stay.
