It appears Premier Greg Selinger wants to make taxes an election issue.

Selinger says his government is considering a surtax on the highest earners in Manitoba.

"They play an important role in offering leadership in the community, they can also make a contribution on the revenue side and still have a good quality of life in Manitoba," said Selinger

The premier says an income threshold has not yet been determined. Selinger says the tax hike would be used for some form of financial relief for low and middle income people.

When asked if he wants to make this an election issue Selinger accused the Conservatives of wanting to reduce taxes for the wealthy. PC Leader Brian Pallister has vowed to index tax brackets to the rate of inflation, raise the basic personal exemption and lower the PST back to 7 per cent.

The premier also accused the Liberals of offering breaks to corporations. Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari has pledged to repeal the payroll tax, eliminate the sales tax on sporting goods and rebate the PST to municipalities.

Bokhari says she’s eyeing a similar surtax for wealthier people and the Conservatives say they have no plans to raise taxes.

Selinger's popularity has plummeted since he raised the PST in 2013 after promising he would not increase the sales tax.
