Talks have broken down between the faculty association and the board of governors at Brandon University. The province is urging the two parties to move to arbitration.

Professors at the university have been on strike since Monday.

On Tuesday the province had appointed a mediator to help negotiate a new contract; but by Wednesday the mediator said the that the two parties had reached an impasse.

Manitoba's Minister of Advanced Education, Diane McGifford has offered her assistance in selecting an arbitrator to help expedite the process.

"We need to move these discussions forward," said McGifford said in a press release Friday. "We need negotiations to proceed in a constructive way to ensure students at the university do not end up being left behind in their studies and course work. Nobody wins when classrooms and lecture halls are left empty."

The university's contract with the faculty association expired March 31. It covers 240 faculty and staff working at the university.

Brandon University is home to 3,300 students.
