Some familiar Manitoba radio personalities went under the knife Saturday as they got straight-razor shaves to kick off the annual Movember campaign.

“I’m not the hairiest of guys, so I’m not sure how good it’s going to look,” said Beau, morning host at BOB FM.

Men around the world will grow moustaches this month to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer, men’s mental health and testicular cancer, a cause that was just added this year.

“I’m the only guy on the radio station right now,” said Beau. “So, we’re going to call it Beau-vember, a take-off on November.”

BOB FM morning co-host Heather Prosak said she doesn’t generally like moustaches, but makes an exception each November.

“We have important men in our lives,” she said. “Whether it’s our dad, our brothers, or our husbands. So, it’s important to raise that money and help out, because a lot of men don’t want to talk about it.”

According to stats on the Movember website, nearly 4,000 Canadian men die as a result of prostate cancer annually and another 1,000 are diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Jean-Louis Allard has supported the cause the last few years and said, now that he has a new baby, the whole point hits even closer to home.

“She’s not even a year old yet, so I would like to get tested,” said Allard. “And obviously bring that awareness out to my co-workers, my family and especially for my health and my young family’s health.”

Movember organizers acknowledge that not everybody who grows a moustache this month registers online and fundraises for the cause, something they encourage everyone to do.

“We call those illegal mo’s,” said Movemver Winnipeg co-chair Jeff Palson. “So don’t grow the illegal mo, grow the official mo. Get to Movember.com, register and truly be a part of the cause.”

In theory anyone growing a moustache for Movember won’t be clean-shaven again until the last day of the month.

“What if I decide to keep mine after Movember?” joked Beau.

“No,” cried co-host Prosak in mock protest.

The BOB FM team promises to hold several fundraising events throughout the month. Anyone interested in donating to their team online can do so at http://ca.movember.com/mospace/10031789.
