Regina’s incoming permanent emergency shelter in need of renovations

Regina’s new permanent emergency shelter is in need of renovations, which will include a 2,000-square foot addition, before it can be considered operational.

The shelter space, the former home of The Regina Eagles Club at 1600 Halifax Street, was acquired by the city in late 2024.

The location was identified by city administration out of 72 possible sites and recommended to executive committee – and passed by Regina’s city council.

A Request for Proposals from the City of Regina outlines that “time is of the essence” and that the work must be completed prior to July 10, 2025.

The city’s lease on the temporary shelter located at “The Nest” expires on July 15 – with the document noting that there is no mechanism to extend the lease.

“At the time, the clients will need to be moved to 1600 Halifax Street. The objective is to award to a general contractor that can finish the renovations on schedule,” the document read.

The contractor eventually chosen will enter into a five-month agreement with the city.

The work will include selective demolitions, general construction activities and renovations.
